The Russian Army from within W Barnes Steveni Frank Hazenplug 9781117730950 Books
I read the original 1914 hardcover book, so I cannot comment on any additions to the "Reprint" sold on Amazon.I read this book for as a potential "Primary Source" citing for a thesis paper. It is not a badly written piece, which examines the Russian Army as though it were an ethnographic study. Mr. Steveni describes the many facets of the army (weaponry, Cossacks, officers, so on) using quite a bit of subjectivity. He attempts to emphasize some background history, too, but his subjectivity makes any historic or cultural information sounds like butt-kissing accolades. Some information (on a historical or cultural level) is just erroneous in places. As a student in Russian history, the read is nearly corny. But, hey, it's 1914, right?
As far as any value goes, it is an insight on how British subjects who worked in Russia saw Imperial Russia. To boot, it was written just before the Great War.
3 1/2 of 5 Amazon stars. I would not take much of the information written as fact. It is one person subjectively writing about his personal feelings and observations while attempting to include historical and ethnographic information.
